FADAMA disburses N18m to rural farmers

FADAMA has disbursed N18 million to 97 groups of rural farmers in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State for the completion of all ongoing FADAMA projects, a World Bank assisted agency for rural farmers, to cushion the effect of transportation in the area.
Also, the agency has commissioned Two brand new outboard engine boats .

Commissioning the boat and presenting the cheques at both pavilion of Oguta Lake and Owerri the state capital, Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources of Imo State, Mrs Adora Ijezie stressed that there would not be any abandoned projects in Imo State FADAMA 111 projects.

She congratulated FADAMA programme for the innovation added in the implementation of voucher system in input support and urged the beneficiaries to use the fund judiciously and effectively for the completion of their projects. She assured farmers in Oguta of the continued support of the state government.

The Imo State Project Coordinator of FADAMA 111, Chief Vitalis Ayo Enwerem, said the two engine boats cost N900,000 each bought through the agency's financial support and the 30 percent counterpart funding paid by the people.

He said the commissioning of the boats was to enable the rural farmers have easy means of moving their farm produce to other parts of the state for sale, adding that the disbursement is not for new projects but for the completion of projects that started two years ago. He said there will not be award of contracts for new projects until the 902 pending ones are completed.

Vitalis said money has been disbursed to deserving FADAMA Cooperative Associations (FCAs) and FUGs that have effectively utilized their first tranche payment and retired them accordingly.
